If Jack Black were to have his way, he and the cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie would return to the big screen again and again.
“I’m always down to party with Bowser in this universe,” he said to Fandango correspondent Nikki Novak during the Big Ticket interview for the new film. “Hopefully we’ll be making several more.”
Brie Larson, who joins the ensemble as the voice of Rosalina, was completely on board, chiming in with a cheerful “I’d like that.”
In 2018, after decades of reluctance to pursue another film project after the notorious failure of 1993’s Super Mario Bros., Nintendo and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto finally found the perfect partners in Universal Pictures and Illumination, and the result was 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Thanks to its spectacular animation, its love for the source material, and an A-list voice cast that included Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), and Jack Black (Bowser), the film was a global success. It earned $1.36 billion at the box office and became the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, not to mention the 15th-highest grossing film of all time, period.

Now the entire gang, including Charlie Day as Luigi and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, is back for another adventure, this time in space, and they’ve brought a couple new faces along. Brie Larson lends her voice to Rosalina, the princess from another galaxy who joins forces with the heroes, and Benny Safdie plays Bowser Jr., who’s out for revenge.
It’s clear from their conversation that they love working on these films and have a lot of fun with them. Pratt, Black, and Taylor-Joy talked about what it was like stepping back into their roles, while Black, Day, and Safdie described the complicated bromantic triangle that forms between Luigi, Bowser, and Bowser Jr. Key gave us a taste of his Toad voice, and Larson, the ensemble’s resident gamer and Mario expert, teased all the Easter eggs that made her squeal as a fan.
Fittingly, tickets for the new movie go on sale today, March 10 — or MAR10, otherwise known as Mario Day. With any luck — and a whole lot of support from adoring fans — The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may reach the same heights as the first film… or soar far beyond them.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in theaters on April 1, 2026. Get your tickets here.
