Jonathan Majors teams with Ben Shapiro for first movie since assault conviction

Cameras are once again rolling on Jonathan Majors, the embattled actor whose career halted in the wake of his arrest and 2023 assault conviction.

The Creed III and Ant-Man: Quantummania star is shooting his first movie in four years, in the form of an untitled action movie from Bonfire Legend and right-wing media company Daily Wire. Deadline was first to report the news, which has since been reposted on the Daily Wire’s social media pages.

The untitled film hails from Kyle Rankin (Run Hide Fight), who is directing his own screenplay. It will be produced by Dallas Sonnier (Bone Tomahawk) and conservative commentator Ben Shapiro (who co-founded the Daily Wire). While details about the plot and cast are being kept under wraps, the story has been compared to ’80s and ’90s action movies Red Dawn and Toy Soldiers, which both involve teenage boys banding together to defeat invading enemies.

Representatives of The Daily Wire and Ben Shapiro did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment.

The Loki alum is not the first Hollywood star to make his comeback with a film from the Daily Wire and Bonfire Legend. The conservative media brands previously produced the Armie Hammer vehicle Frontier Crucible following a sex scandal, and, after Gina Carano‘s controversial exit from Star Wars series The Mandalorian, the next film the actress starred in, Terror on the Prairie.

Majors was previously attached to the supernatural revenge thriller Merciless from Martin Villeneuve, the younger brother of Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve; however, no further updates have followed the initial summer 2024 casting news.

The latest film announcement comes amid Majors’ continued efforts to rebuild his Hollywood career. Three years ago, the actor was a fast-rising star: After garnering acclaim with such projects as indie darling The Last Black Man in San Francisco and the HBO horror series Lovecraft Country, Majors made the jump to big blockbuster titles. He fronted the Jeymes Samuel-directed Western The Harder They Fall with Idris Elba, starred alongside Michael B. Jordan in his directorial debut Creed III, and joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kang the Conqueror, the Big Bad slated to succeed Thanos after the Infinity Saga concluded.

But then came Majors’ 2023 arrest in connection to a domestic dispute. In the weeks that followed, the actor was dropped by his talent manager and publicist, and parted ways with several high-profile projects, including the forthcoming Dennis Rodman biopic 48 Hours in Vegas. Marvel also canceled plans for his Kang character to serve as the big bad in upcoming projects. Additionally, his film Magazine Dreams, which had garnered rave reviews and awards buzz earlier that year, was pulled from the Searchlight release calendar

In December 2023, Majors was found guilty of one count of assault in the third degree and one count of harassment in the second degree. The actor did not face prison time for the conviction, but a Manhattan criminal court judge ruled that he must complete a 52-week in-person batterer’s intervention program. He was also ordered to continue his mental health therapy.

The following month, reports emerged that Searchlight had quietly returned the Magazine Dreams distribution rights to its filmmakers, eventually leading Briarcliff Entertainment to acquire and release the film in March 2025. The drama opened to $701,365 and grossed $1.1 million in the United States.
