Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis said Monday he will soon announce the members of a working group tasked with preparing justice-related priorities for Greece’s presidency of the Council of the European Union from July 1 to December 31, 2027.

The announcement followed a meeting in Athens between Floridis and Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan. Ireland is preparing to assume the EU’s six-month rotating presidency in the second half of 2026.

According to the Greek Justice Ministry, O’Callaghan asked about reforms Greece has implemented to modernize its justice system, citing delays in Ireland’s civil justice administration.

Floridis outlined measures introduced in Greece to speed up court procedures and strengthen the functioning of the judicial system.

O’Callaghan also expressed interest in the process for selecting and appointing Greek judicial officials, and in how safeguards are maintained to ensure the independence of judges and the broader justice system. [AMNA]
