Greek multinational Karatzis Group is investing €240m ($278m) in a data center in the region of Boeotia, according to real estate news outlet eRed.
The Crete-headquartered company specializes in the manufacturing of plastic netting for the agricultural, packaging, and construction industries. It also has a renewable and luxury hospitality business.
The company has not typically been involved in data center projects to date, beyond those used internally at its headquarters.
The project involves the construction of seven data centers, spanning 342,465 sqm (3.68 million sq ft) in the Municipality of Orchomenos, some 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Athens.
The seven units will have a combined power capacity of 430MW, with each building having a total load of 61.49MW.
The data center will sit on the Ampelia site, off the PATHE (E75) motorway, roughly 2km (1.2 miles) north of the nearby settlement of Kastro.
The design of the data center began in 2025 with a site selection study and an environmental impact study.
The project’s financing is expected to come from a combination of equity, bank loans, grants, and potential co-funding from European or national resources.
Construction will take place across three stages spanning 18 months. The first two stages will last eight months each and will involve the foundation works, site preparation, construction, and installation of supporting infrastructure.
The final two-month stage will involve installing electromechanical and IT equipment, integrating systems, and trialling operations to ensure full operational readiness.
According to data from the Ministry of Culture and Sports, quoted by Greek business title Mononews, the data center will be located outside heritage and archaeologically sensitive areas.
Greece’s investment in data centers is increasing amid a growing demand for low-latency connectivity in the Mediterranean region and the EU’s push for data sovereignty.
Last year, Digital Reality announced the launch of Athens-3 (ATH3), its largest data center to date in Greece. The company already has three facilities in the country, including Athens-1 (ATH1), Athens-2 (ATH2), and Heraklion-1 (HER1).
Other major technology and infrastructure companies are operating or developing data centers in Greece, including Microsoft, which is currently building a data center in the Attica region.
