Kate Winslet swerved a fashion mishap when she first met King Charles nearly 30 years ago.

On Nov. 18, the Academy Award-winning actress shared the humorous story during a Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearance.

Winslet, 50, recalled the royal encounter when host Jimmy Kimmel asked her about her role as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, one of King Charles’ personal charities, and she said that it’s remarkable to meet him.

“He’s a very gentle, personable individual, but he is the King, and it’s quite something to meet him,” the actress began.

“The first time I met him, oh my goodness, he had come to support the premiere, it was a royal premiere, of Sense and Sensibility, when I was only 20,” she said about the event in 1996. “And I sort of hadn’t realized that we were really going to meet him, and so I forgot about the fact that I was wearing a kind of a transparent lace outfit. And thank God I had worn a coat because as he is making his way towards me, I’m like, ‘Nipples, nipples, nipples, oh my God!’ And someone just went, ‘Coat!’ and I went, ‘Your Majesty!’ basically covering myself in a cape.”

The royal story wasn’t the only one Winslet shared in conversation with Kimmel, who described the King, 77, as an “extraordinary man” and “generous” person.

In June, Winslet was announced as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, taking on an official role with the charity Charles established in 1990 to create communities where people, places and the planet can harmoniously coexist.

The same month, Winslet met the monarch again at The King’s Foundation annual awards ceremony at St. James’s Palace in London, and Kimmel wanted to hear how she greeted the sovereign alongside Meryl Streep and the newly knighted David Beckham.

“Did you volunteer to go first because of all the rules that are involved?” the host asked, referring to royal protocol as a photo rolled from the palace meetup.

“Actually, there was a conversation about this,” the actress said about what happened behind the scenes. “So Meryl and I, as we were walking to meet the King… she says to me, ‘Do you think we have to curtsy?’ I said, ‘Absolutely, we have to curtsy.’ She was like ‘Okay, is it a big curtsy? What do we do?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, we’ll just make the most,’ and she was like, ‘I don’t know if we need to do that. There was a big panic because we didn’t know what the form was. Obviously, we had to curtsy.”

The Goodbye June director said she volunteered to go first, and Kimmel joked, “Who was more nervous, Meryl Streep to meet the King or the King to meet Meryl Streep?”

“I don’t know, she was a little bit nervous actually,” Winslet said about her fellow star.

Winslet has another buzzy royal event on the calendar next month and is set to attend Kate Middleton‘s fifth annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey on Dec. 5.

“Combining traditional and modern elements to encompass people of all faiths and none, the service will see the world-renowned Westminster Abbey choir sing some of the nation’s most beloved carols, alongside musical performances and readings by guests including Hannah Waddingham, Dan Smith, Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor,” a Kensington Palace statement said about her involvement.
