LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers defends Kevin Durant of the Houston Rockets.
The king has still got it. LeBron James went for 30 points while leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 124–116 win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. He was the second-highest scorer in the game, trailing only teammate Luka Dončić.
The 41-year-old Lakers forward impressed fans and NBA analysts alike with his performance, which included several highlight-reel plays.
Among those impressed was the Rockets’ Kevin Durant, who scored 18 points in the loss.
“I think he could play for another 4–5 years, to be honest,” Durant said when asked how long he thinks James could continue playing in the NBA.
Currently in his 23rd season, the thought of another four or five years of James playing seems far-fetched. However, with performances like Wednesday night, maybe it isn’t out of the question.
James already leads the league in numerous career statistical categories, most notably as the all-time points scorer. He surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record in 2023. He also holds the record for the most total points combined across the regular season and playoffs.
In addition to scoring, James ranks first in total minutes played, field goals made, field goals attempted, and several other less notable accolades. James also reached a goal of his by playing with his son, Bronny James, which he had noted earlier in his career was an aspiration.
What’s Left for LeBron James to Prove

At this stage of his career, it’s fair to question what more James could realistically prove. Anyone who is still questioning his GOAT status has likely made up their mind, and any additional awards, accolades, or career records would just be additional padding to an already unprecedented career.
However, it’s probably safe to say there’s plenty he’d still like to accomplish.
James has won four NBA titles: two with the Miami Heat, one with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and one with the Lakers during the COVID bubble tournament in 2020. He remains two behind former Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards guard Michael Jordan, who many consider to be the only other contender for the title of best basketball player ever.
Winning again at his age would further separate him from past legends.
Another thing James could look to in his remaining seasons would be mentoring younger players. The front office paired the veteran with a young superstar in Dončić, and he could help his son Bronny become a more well-polished NBA player. James’ son Bryce is also only a few years away from being eligible to play in the league, which could be another goal of his.
A Look at How How Long LeBron James Might Play

Presuming when James will call it a career would be pure speculation. Chances are James himself doesn’t have the answer.
He has continued to evolve his playing style as he has aged, and big nights like Wednesday show he still has the athletic ability to play like one of the best.
Other factors will also play a role, such as whether he continues to stay healthy and whether any other aspirations outside of basketball become of greater importance. Ultimately, James is in control of his own timeline, and we’ll enjoy the ride as long as it lasts.
