In the last few years, there’s been a dramatic shift in the activewear department.
Buying a coordinated set has always sparked a little jolt of sartorial joy for me (and usually doubles as motivation to actually get to the gym). Somewhere along the way, however, workout clothes stopped being only about workouts. They started slipping into the fashion space too, showing up at brunch, Erewhon runs, and under oversized coats. And there is perhaps no better indicator of this shift than Kim Kardashian’s decision to merge her fit-first empire with the world’s most recognizable athletic giant.
Which brings us to NikeSkims, and specifically the arrival of Drop 2, which was released last week on November 13. The collaboration’s entire mission is captured in a single line the brands have repeated since launch: “Merging Nike’s performance innovation with Skims’ obsession with fit and form, the collection delivers sculpting, versatile pieces that move with her — studio to street, low-impact to high-performance — while unlocking endless possibilities for layering, styling, and self-expression,” reads a press release. A bold statement for sure, but for once, it doesn’t feel like a stretch when you actually get into the pieces.
It’s a partnership that feels like a match made in heaven. As a Skims loyalist who swears by every piece I own, it feels like only a natural development that Kardashian’s brainchild would go on to take up even more space in a predominantly male-dominated space. Sorry, but Kim K. knows what the girls want!
The second drop expands the collection into seven sub-lines and 65 silhouettes. There’s the return of Shine, Matte, and Airy, which bring new shapes and deeper colors; the debut of Woven Nylon introduces a soft, winter-ready layer; and new accessories finally round out the head-to-toe vision of dressing the part.
So does it live up to the hype, especially when you actually have to move in around the pieces, too? We tried on pieces from Nike x Skims Drop 2 below.
These Balletcore Stirrup Leggings
Madeline Hirsch
“I’m a bit of a Skims fan. Many of my worn to death staples—bodysuits, baby tees, and layering tops—are courtesy of this Kardashian clan enterprise. So, I was excited to see what the Nike collab might bring.
First, my favorites: I love this coat. Its tie belt, roomy fit, and loose hood make me feel like I’m headed to the boxing gym. It’s also incredibly warm—or at least, able to withstand the 40-degree winds hitting me as I walked along the East River. The waistpack is also a winner, and it’s become a go-to for daily walks. The sports bra is also cute, but perhaps not supportive enough for my morning run. But it’ll be great for low impact workouts (like the hot yoga classes I opt for in winter). Finally, these leggings are beyond fun with their stirrup foot and cute design details, but at 5’10 I might just be a touch too tall for them.
We need a tall inseam version, Kim! Please and thank you!” – fashion features director, Madeline Hirsch, wearing the Drawcord Leggings, Scoop Bra, and Wrap Coat.
This Sporty Jersey Shirt
Daisy Maldonado
“I love an oversized shirt while I’m working out, and moreover, because I live a commuter lifestyle, when I’m on the train to workout. This jersey shirt is so buttery soft and light, and since it’s made out of nylon and has breathable Airy fabric, I particularly enjoyed knowing that it was wicking away sweat as I moved. I’m not typically a biker shorts type of gal, but if there’s anyone who could get me to wear them out and about again, it would—of course—be the face behind the circa 2016 trend, Miss Kimberly Noel Kardashian.
When paired with this large shirt, which I should note was a struggle to find my correct size for because it *is* ridiculously oversized, it felt way more wearable than just wearing a traditional sports bra. They also weren’t constraining at all. True to Skims’ DNA, I felt secure as I moved too. I cinched the shirt with the waist pack to add a bit of structure, but it was surprisingly functional as well. Despite its ultra-tiny size, you can fit a whole iPhone 16 in there, which I consider such a win.” – fashion editor, Daisy Maldonado wearing the V-Neck Oversized Top, Biker Short, and Waistpack.
These Tear-Away Pants
Kara Brown
“This set left me with a lot of feelings. To start, I loved the tear-away pants and the sneakers. The pants were perfectly baggy and comfy. I styled them with a crop top and the sneakers and wore them to a club and felt perfectly sporty-chic.
I wanted to love the bra and leggings, but they didn’t love me. The bra and the leggings both had a cute cut but the sizing was a bit off. I followed the size guide, but felt like the two ran large. The bra continuously rode up while the leggings rolled down. I wore them while teaching my barre class and felt like I couldn’t focus on my class as I was constantly adjusting the set. That said, when I was motionless, I loved the way the set looked.” – beauty editor, Kara Brown wearing the Side Snaps Pants and Scoop Neck Bra.
