New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown has seen plenty of unique performances in his career, but what Tyler Kolek accomplished Sunday stood out.
Just hours after delivering a historic performance in the G League, Kolek returned to the NBA floor and made an immediate impact as the Knicks rolled to a 145-113 victory over the Washington Wizards at Madison Square Garden.
“That’s an amazing feat,” Brown said. “To play in a G League game in the afternoon and then come play in an NBA game — it’s got to be a weird feeling.”
Kolek handled it seamlessly.
From G League Star to Knicks Spark
Earlier in the day, Kolek dominated for the Westchester Knicks, pouring in 42 points and 11 assists in a historic outing — becoming the first player in franchise history to record a 40-point, 10-assist game.
Hours later, he checked into the Knicks’ NBA game and stayed hot.
Kolek scored 11 points in just over five minutes, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. His scoring burst came during a dominant second half that saw New York pull away.
It was a rare same-day double — and one that left an impression on his coach.
“But these guys are pro athletes, and they do a great job of taking care of their bodies,” Brown said. “Our performance group does a good job in that area, too. So for them to be able to do that, to me, is an amazing thing.”
Knicks Continue Dominant Run
Kolek’s performance came as part of a complete team effort.
Karl-Anthony Towns led the way with 26 points and 16 rebounds, while Jalen Brunson added 23 points as the Knicks secured their sixth straight win.
Josh Hart contributed 16 points, hitting all three of his 3-point attempts, while Mikal Bridges and Mitchell Robinson provided additional production.
New York exploded for 77 points in the second half, shooting 58.5% from the field and 53% from 3-point range in one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season.
Brown Highlights Kolek’s Impact
Despite limited minutes, Kolek’s energy and shot-making stood out.
“It was fun to see,” Brown said. “Tyler hit some shots, and you hear the crowd cheering his name — all that stuff is a lot of fun.”
Brown also emphasized the team’s collective effort late in the game, particularly given the unusual circumstances.
“But I like the way our guys tried to play down the stretch, especially after playing in that G League game earlier today,” he added.
Development Continues Amid Role Changes
Kolek’s strong showing comes amid a shifting role in New York’s rotation.
The second-year guard has seen reduced NBA minutes following roster changes, including the addition of veteran point guard Jose Alvarado. Still, the Knicks have continued to use G League assignments as a way to keep Kolek developing.
Sunday’s performance served as a reminder of his potential.
In four G League appearances this season, Kolek is averaging over 20 points and 11 assists, showcasing both scoring ability and playmaking.
Kolek’s Long-Term Outlook
For the Knicks, the win reinforced their momentum as they continue to climb the Eastern Conference standings.
For Kolek, it was something more.
A statement performance. A glimpse of his growth. And a reminder that even in limited opportunities, he can impact the game.
As Brown made clear, what Kolek accomplished Sunday wasn’t just productive — it was rare.
