The Los Angeles Lakers are navigating a turbulent stretch of the season following the All-Star break, arriving at a crucial stage of the campaign.
With the team sitting sixth in a tightly packed Western Conference at 38-25, the battle for postseason positioning continues to intensify.
After enduring a recent three-game losing streak, the Lakers have responded by winning four of their last five contests, including a 128-117 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday night.
While attention remains fixed on the NBA roster during this important stretch, the organization has continued to rely heavily on its G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, using the platform to provide valuable minutes for developing prospects and fringe rotation players.
Lakers Continue Developmental Plan for Rookie Wing
Two-way trio Drew Timme, Nick Smith Jr., and Chris Manon have all played prominent roles in recent games for South Bay, alongside NBA assignees Bronny James and Adou Thiero.
On the Lakers’ latest injury report, much of the attention centered on the statuses of LeBron James, Deandre Ayton, and Maxi Kleber. However, James and Thiero were also listed.
Their inclusion was not injury-related. Instead, it reflected continued G League assignments designed to support their development.
Thiero’s situation is particularly notable. Since being selected in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft, injuries have significantly delayed his ability to establish momentum.
The Lakers have taken a cautious approach with the rookie following offseason knee surgery that sidelined him early in the year, along with a more recent MCL sprain that kept him out throughout January.
As a result, the organization has carefully managed his workload, allowing him to appear in just one game during each of South Bay’s recent back-to-back sets as he works to rebuild conditioning and rhythm.
His most recent outing came in a win over the Stockton Kings, where the 21-year-old recorded eight points, three rebounds, one assist, two steals, and one block in 15 minutes.
Encouraging Flashes Despite Limited Appearances
The game against Stockton represented Thiero’s least productive outing in the G League this season, though he has already displayed the athleticism and defensive versatility that made him an intriguing draft selection.
One of his most efficient performances came against the Texas Legends, where he matched his season-high with 19 points and added seven rebounds while shooting 7-of-8 from the field, including a made three-pointer.
He followed that performance with another strong showing against the Valley Suns, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a block on 6-of-9 shooting across 24 minutes.
Through six games with South Bay this season, Thiero is averaging 14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per contest while shooting an efficient 62.0 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three-point range.
Notably, the Lakers’ G League affiliate has won all six of those games, highlighting the rookie’s positive impact on the floor.
He has also averaged just one turnover per game, including two error-free outings, an encouraging sign of his decision-making as he continues adjusting to the professional level.
Back in December, Lakers head coach JJ Redick noted that the organization would “continue to use South Bay for him to get reps.”
While Thiero’s assignments have been sporadic to this point, the recent pattern suggests he could spend significant time with the affiliate down the stretch of the season as the Lakers focus on accelerating his development.
