Liverpool have triggered a one-year option in goalkeeper Alisson’s contract.
It means the 33-year-old will extend his stay at Anfield into the 2026-27 season.
The Brazilian was always expected to stick around for at least another year due to the option that had been in place in his deal.
He has been Liverpool’s first choice goalkeeper since signing from Roma in 2018 and has played a big part in the club’s success.
Keeping him on board for another season is a timely boost as Liverpool continue to plan for the future.
In an era where top-level goalkeepers are difficult to replace, Alisson’s continued presence will help bring stability, leadership and continuity at a crucial time.
At the end of this season key defenders Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate are out of contract while a number of other long-serving players are heading into the final year of their deals this summer.
Alisson’s extension follows the news of Ryan Gravenberch’s new deal and will help Liverpool build towards next season.
Analysis: Liverpool need Alisson’s leadership
Although this does not come as a huge surprise, it is still a step in the right direction for Liverpool.
Alisson’s presence at the club stretches way past his on-field qualities, as he’s a mature, experienced leader in a team that is in transition. Liverpool are in the middle of blending experienced leaders with emerging talent, so securing a valuable piece of the spine will allow the club to focus on other areas this summer, knowing that the team is in safe hands with Alisson still at the club and Giorgi Mamardashvili in support.
This season his form has been steady rather than spectacular, but head coach Arne Slot recognises the value he still brings.
There’s a clear chemistry with the players in front of him, and he’s a big part of the build-up. When asked about a drop-off in his distribution this season, Slot came to his defence, explaining that the tactical shift has required him to attempt more long passes, which are often harder to execute.
His injuries — particularly the amount of hamstring problems he’s had in more recent years — are another concern but that’s why Liverpool have strong back-up in Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman.
Alisson’s mentality and calm authority can still make a difference, so having him around next season will be a boost. If it’s his final season, he’ll be remembered as one of the all-time greats.
