The UEFA Europa League is an international soccer club tournament organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). It is considered the second most important club competition in Europe, behind only the Champions League.
The tournament is played in several stages: a group stage, knockout rounds, and a final played as a single match at a venue chosen by UEFA. The winner not only receives the trophy and international prestige, but also automatic qualification for the group stage of the next edition of the Champions League.
It was founded in 1971 under the name UEFA Cup, as the successor to the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and in 2009 it adopted its current name along with a new format. Teams that failed to qualify for the Champions League participate in it, as well as those that finish in certain positions in their national leagues or win local cups.
