The Los Angeles Lakers will be without Luka Dončić on Monday night, and coach JJ Redick said the star guard did not take the news lightly.
Dončić will serve a one-game suspension against the Washington Wizards after the NBA declined to rescind the technical foul he received in Friday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets — his 16th of the season, triggering an automatic suspension.
“He’s disappointed,” Redick said, via California Post, after Sunday’s practice. “He wants to be there for his teammates.”
Redick added that Dončić’s reaction reflects a consistent trait.
“He plays,” Redick said. “He’s not a guy that takes games off. He can be banged up and he’s going to play.”
Lakers Star’s Suspension Comes With Bigger Stakes
The one-game absence is not just a one-off development.
Under NBA rules, players are suspended after their 16th technical foul, with an additional one-game suspension triggered for every two technicals beyond that mark. That leaves Dončić with little margin for error as the regular season winds down.
The technical that triggered the suspension came during an exchange with Brooklyn’s Ziaire Williams after an offensive foul call. Both players were assessed double technical fouls following the altercation.
Dončić finished with 41 points in the victory.
The league confirmed Saturday that the technical would stand, officially triggering the suspension.
Risk Remains Moving Forward
Even after serving the suspension, Dončić remains at risk of further discipline.
As previously reported, any additional accumulation of technical fouls over the final stretch could result in more missed games — a significant concern for a team relying heavily on his production.
The suspension also carries a financial penalty, with Dončić forfeiting a portion of his salary, and future suspensions escalating that cost.
For now, the focus is on avoiding further incidents and maintaining composure during high-intensity stretches.
Luka Doncic’s Dominant Stretch Interrupted
The timing of the suspension is notable given Dončić’s recent form.
Since late February, the Lakers have gone 14–2, fueled by Dončić’s all-around production. Over that stretch, he has averaged more than 36 points per game while also contributing across rebounds, assists and steals.
He was named Western Conference Player of the Week in consecutive weeks during that run, further underscoring his importance to the team’s late-season push.
Monday’s absence temporarily halts that momentum at a critical point in the schedule.
Lakers Adjustments Against Washington
The Lakers will host Washington at Crypto.com Arena, where they will need to adjust without their primary offensive engine.
“With the way we’ve leaned on Luka, the game plan has to look different,” Redick said.
The responsibility for initiating offense and creating scoring opportunities will shift to other players for one night, with the team expected to rely on a more balanced approach.
Availability Now a Key Factor
Redick emphasized that Dončić’s frustration centers on his desire to be available.
“He wants to be out there,” Redick said.
With the playoffs approaching, that availability — and discipline — could become just as important as production.
The Lakers remain in a competitive race for playoff positioning, and any additional absences could carry significant implications for their postseason outlook.
