Maine sports thrived in 2025


From Westbrook’s miracle run on the gridiron to Newport’s Cooper Flagg going to play for the Dallas Mavericks after being the number one NBA Draft pick, it was a fantastic 2025 sports season.

The Cheverus field hockey team clinched the state championship for the third consecutive year, completing an undefeated season with a 17-0-1 record. Since 2022, the Stags have achieved an impressive 88-1-1 record.

In hockey, Westbrook’s Carter Amico was selected 38th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round. The 6-foot-6 defenseman is making waves in his freshman season at Boston University, a powerhouse in Hockey East.

Thornton Academy’s football team secured another Class A state championship, narrowly defeating Portland. This victory marks the Trojans’ seventh gold ball under the guidance of legendary coach Kevin Kezal, who celebrated his 200th career win.

Jace Pastore of West Bath made history at Oxford Plains Speedway as the youngest driver to compete and win a stock car race. At just nine years old, Jace aspires to compete in and win the Oxford 250.

The Greely football team, after winning an 8-man state championship last year, claimed its first-ever Class C state championship with a perfect 11-0 season. The Rangers will enter the 2026 season on a 20-game win streak.

Windham’s softball team triumphed over defending state champion Cheverus Stags with a thrilling 1-0 victory in the Class A South championship. The Eagles went on to defeat Edward Little in the state finals, thanks to a two-hit shutout by Kennedy Kimball.

Thornton Academy’s boys lacrosse team ended Falmouth’s 28-game win streak by defeating the Navigators 8-6 to win the Class A state championship.

Portland’s new professional soccer team, the Hearts of Pine, enjoyed immediate success, leading USL League One in attendance with over 5,800 fans per game and making a deep playoff run.

In a remarkable sports story, the Westbrook football team captured its first-ever Class B state championship, defeating previously undefeated Cony.

Cooper Flagg of Newport, Maine, had a standout 2025. After leading Duke to the Final Four, he was selected first overall by the Dallas Mavericks. Before turning 19, Flagg set an NBA record by scoring 42 points against Utah, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to surpass 40 points.
