Some of the largest trucks in central Alabama rolled into downtown Birmingham this weekend.
The McWane Science Center hosted its annual Big Machines Day on Saturday giving children and their families an up-close-and-personal experience with a monster truck, an 18-wheeler, farming and construction equipment and more. Kids got an opportunity to climb into the vehicles to see how they work, and engage with crew members who operate these massive vehicles every day.
During this year’s event, McWane officials said they made more room for interactive experiences by closing 19th Avenue North and 3rd Avenue North. The street closures allowed for a two-story scaffold constructed by Vulcan Industrial Contractors to give guests a view from above the event.
While families engaged with the massive vehicles outside, children tested out their problem-solving and teamworking skills during engineering challenges inside the McWane Center. Industry partners talked about engineering, trade and construction careers to spark young minds about their future.
“When children sit in the driver’s seat or stand beneath a crane, it sparks questions,” The McWane Center said in a press release. “That curiosity naturally connects to science, engineering, and future career paths in our community.”
