Meeting held in Greece to discuss ways to strengthen relationship with Greeks abroad


At the initiative of the Cyclades MP and President of the Special Standing Committee on Hellenism of the Diaspora, Filippos Fortomas, a meeting of that committee was held on the topic of “Information of the Members of the Committee by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, responsible for issues of Hellenism abroad, Ioannis – Michael (Yiannis) Loverdos”.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister Loverdos as well as the Secretary General of Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy, Maira Myrogianni.

At the beginning of the meeting, Fortomas (Chairman of the Committee) underlined the importance of regularly informing members and strengthening the substantive dialogue with the political leadership, with the aim of highlighting issues that concern the Hellenes abroad and promoting effective solutions.

In addition, he referred to the Committee’s continuous highlighting of issues that concern the diaspora, as well as the continuous granting of a platform within the framework of its meetings to diaspora bodies, associations and personalities who contribute decisively through their presence to the transmission from the source itself, of valuable knowledge of the objective issues that the Greek State needs to see.

The Deputy Minister and the Secretary General presented the work and priorities of the Ministry, focusing on the strengthening of the Greek language internationally, the connection of the new generation of the diaspora with Greece, the modernisation and digitalisation of consular services, as well as the institutional strengthening of the State’s ties with Greeks abroad.

Particular reference was made to the promotion of postal voting for Greeks abroad, as well as to actions that strengthen the country’s cultural and educational presence internationally, contributing to the preservation of national identity and the cohesion of the diaspora.

After the end of the meeting, Fortomas stated:

“The meeting confirmed the importance of continuous and substantial cooperation between the Parliament and the political leadership on issues of Greeks abroad.

We must further strengthen ties with the Greeks of the diaspora, emphasizing the new generation, our language and culture.

With coordinated initiatives and specific actions, we can effectively respond to the needs of our compatriots abroad and ensure the preservation of Greek identity throughout the world.”
