The Carnegie Science Observatories has announced that Michael Blanton will become its 12th director, taking the helm of astronomical research programs in Pasadena and overseeing telescope operations at Chile’s renowned Las Campanas Observatory.

Michael Blanton, a Professor of Physics and Director of the Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics at New York University, will succeed John Mulchaey, who was appointed Carnegie Science President in late 2024.
Blanton said he is eager to expand both scientific achievement and public engagement at the Observatories. “Engaging the community in the scientific process is an essential part of the Observatories’ mission,” he noted. “My goal as director will be to help Carnegie astronomers achieve their most ambitious goals and to share their insights and discoveries with the world.”
