Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls is a six-time NBA champion.
NBA icon Michael Jordan confirmed that he will never provide a single name when asked to name the greatest NBA player of all time. The Chicago Bulls icon is considered the most popular choice for the NBA GOAT due to his six NBA Championship and countless iconic memories. Names like LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are also mentioned as having the best arguments against Jordan.
However, Jordan gave this insight via a rare one on one interview Gayle King on CBS:
“There’s no such thing as the G.O.A.T. Not to me. It’s only because we are transcended from other people, other athletes. We learn from other athletes. We progress the game as we move further. To say that one is better than the other is not really right.”
A similar quote was shared by Jordan during his NBA on NBC Sports interview with Mike Tirico. Despite being the popular answer for this topic, Jordan clearly doesn’t like to define any one player as the greatest of all time due to the variables.
Past players often get overlooked since the NBA witnessed new booms in popularity after adding Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Jordan often shows respect to names before him who get snubbed.
Why Jordan Dislikes The GOAT Narrative
Jordan explained this more in depth to Tirico and made it clear that the evolution of basketball should pay respect to past eras. Names like Jerry West and Oscar Robertson were cited by Jordan for rarely getting mentioned in these discussions.
Tirico got the following quote from Jordan to share his honest thoughts on the GOAT:
“The whole GOAT term is never going to be something that I ever will get high or low about. It just doesn’t exist to me. I never played against Oscar Robertson or Jerry West. I would have loved to, absolutely loved to. Just the competitor that I am. And I actually learned from them, and we paved the road to the Kobes and the LeBrons.”
Jordan’s belief is that he can’t be compared to West or Robertson since he never played against them. Both legends received the respect from Jordan admitting that he learned from growing up watching them. Kobe Bryant and LeBron were named as future GOATs who Jordan believes he helped paved the road for.
Why Jordan Remains The Universal NBA GOAT
Time sees new stars entering the NBA and achieving success at the highest level. LeBron winning four NBA Championships and having over two decades of superb play got him close to Jordan, but Jordan still gets more praise as the GOAT.
The mystique of Jordan felt like watching a rock star play sports in the 1990s. Cultural figures like Jordan and Michael Jackson felt larger their specific industries. An NBA player will have to become one of the most popular names in the world outside of just playing great basketball.
Players like Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will hope to challenge Jordan and James in the all-time rankings. However, a combination of winning at the highest level and dominating offensively for over a decade is the bare minimum. A larger-than-life persona outside of basketball is a third step needed for someone to pass Jordan.
