TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – All this week, we’re sharing match stories from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Arizona.
We hope it shows you the wonderful new friendships that have been forged with bigs and littles, the adult volunteers, and the kids they’ve matched with.
For Monday, we meet Dan and Miguel.
It’s obvious they have fun hanging out.
They sound like typical siblings, and just like brothers, show no mercy for each other while playing games.
Dan and Miguel were matched through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Arizona five years ago when Dan wanted to volunteer and give back.
“I just heard about Big Brothers Big Sisters, and what I loved about it was, one, the people here, but just that you get to really focus on a relationship,” Dan said.
Miguel and his mom learned about the group from a school counselor when he was going through a rough patch.
“It was more like behavioral issues, and my mom, she’s a single parent, so the counselor gave us all these programs, and BBBS was one of the highlighted ones,” Miguel said.
They enjoy sports, going to the movies, playing video games, but their number one connection is food.
“We cook a lot,” Miguel said. “We eat a lot.”
“Eat, we love to eat food,” Dan said. “We’ve made food, we go to restaurants, that’s where we can just hang out and talk.”
They both agree that it might seem intimidating at first to get involved, but they said it’s worth the lifetime friendship.
“You have to look at the pros and cons,” Miguel said. “The pros being you get to talk to someone, you get to have an outlet, you get to have fun, you get to do what you want. The cons being, you have to step out of your comfort zone for a little bit, but after that it’s like a sigh of relief.”
“I think it’s scary for a lot of people, but I think once you get ot it they do a really good job of matching you here, and I think that’s really important because they try to set you up with somebody who matches a lot of your interests,” Dan said.
From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 13 News anchor Dan Marries will host a carwash to support the organization.
The event will be held at the Chuze Fitness at Grand and Craycroft. More information is at www.kold.com/community/dans-car-wash/
