The Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection, Yiannis Lambropoulos, has released statistical data on the number of foreign prisoners in correctional institutions, categorized by offense and citizenship, to Parliament since 2020 as part of parliamentary oversight.
The data shows that on 29.1.2026, 6,939 out of a total of 13,530 inmates in Greek prisons were foreigners, or 51.29% of all inmates.
On 31.12.2025, regarding offenses, most foreign prisoners, 2,462 in number, were detained for smuggling illegal immigrants.
Also:
- 1,365 foreigners were detained for narcotics,
- 602 for theft (including burglary),
- 485 were held for robbery,
- 308 for involvement in a criminal organization,
- 244 for intentional homicide,
- 132 for rape,
- 129 for attempted murder,
- 94 for gang membership,
- 92 for illegal stay.
