GREECE, N.Y. — A local mother is demanding justice after her 4-year-old son, Axel, was killed in a murder-suicide by his father. Alexis Hernandez, Axel’s mother, says the father’s behavior leading up to the killings concerned her.
Alexis Hernandez shared her frustration with law enforcement’s response when she reached out for help.
“I literally cried to them and I begged. I said, ‘Can you please just do something before this escalates,’” Hernandez said.
On January 26, Greece police responded to a welfare check at a home on Squareview Lane. By then, it was too late.

“We got the front door unlocked, and the cops still stood back all the way in the street and said that they could not go into the house,” Hernandez said. “We said, ‘Please, like, you know, in any other instance, if there was a missing child or something, wouldn’t you go in or in you trying to help?’ And they said, ‘This is our sergeant’s orders. We can’t, can’t do anything.’”

Hernandez says Axel lit up any room, and was taken too soon.
“He was so sweet, so funny. He just wise beyond his years, so curious and so inquisitive and just, you know, eager to learn about the world around him,” Hernandez said.

Moving forward, she hopes for change.
“I just hope that it’s some type of reform done in the system where there’s better resources for women and parents who feel fearful of an ex-partner, no matter how big or small the threat may seem,” Hernandez said.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says it responded on the morning of Jan. 25, and the agency is “working diligently to understand what took place when our deputy responded and if we should have taken any additional action that day.”

“The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Hilton on the morning of January 25, 2026. An MCSO deputy spoke with a woman, who we now know is the grieving mother of the young boy tragically killed in Greece by his father the following day, late in the evening.
We are working diligently to understand what took place when our deputy responded and if we should have taken any additional action that day. Our intention is to share the facts of this case and our response that day with the family first and then share them with the public.
You know us. We are currently looking into whether there are any discrepancies, and if there is corrective action to take on our part, we will own it and take that action seriously and immediately with the family in mind.”
