NEWS CHRONICLE PHOTOS BY JONATHAN MEYER – The bake sale started with two full tables of goods and quickly sold through all items in support of the Deane family.
Support for the Deane family was on full display Tuesday evening as members of the South Tama community gathered for a bake sale organized by the STC Music Boosters.
Held prior to the annual Parade of Bands concert in the South Tama County High School cafeteria, the fundraiser brought together students, families, and community members who purchased homemade baked goods to help support Les and Kay Deane and their grandsons, Hunter and Jordan, following a devastating house fire that destroyed their home earlier this year.
According to a GoFundMe page created to support the family, the fire broke out around 1 a.m. on Jan. 24, completely destroying the Deanes’ home and leaving the family without their most prized and basic belongings. Despite the severity of the fire, everyone was able to evacuate safely.
The fundraiser notes that firefighters responding to the call faced additional challenges due to freezing temperatures, which caused a nearby fire hydrant to freeze. It reportedly took about 45 minutes to establish access to water, forcing the family to watch as their home burned.
Les and Kay Deane care for their grandsons Hunter, 18, and Jordan, 16, who both participate in the band. During the concert, STC Band Director Mike Carnahan explained the importance of the fundraiser.

“I want to make sure that people are taken care of in our band family and we had a tragedy with one of our families and we wanted to do what we could to help that out. So if you got a chance to purchase some baked items, or if you want to just give monetarily to the fund all the proceeds are going right to the Deane to DeFoe family, who lost nearly everything in a tragic house fire recently. We wanted to make sure that we helped them out,” he said.
For those who would still like to contribute, a GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to assist the Deane family as they recover from the loss of their home. Donations can be made online at:
