Soto the Activist

Thursday 9, Valhalla

Soto the Activist is a fixture at Underground Voices’ hip-hop open mics at the 13th Floor. So much so, he shouts out the venue’s area code on his jazzy new single, “Cody Rhodes”: “78701, that shit a sacred code/ City showin’ love to your boy, but I can’t call it home.” On Thursday, the impassioned lyricist crosses the street for a standalone set in support of alt-rap collective Grim Village.

Grocery Bag

Friday 10, Antone’s

If you missed these local psych rockers during their 13-show South by Southwest blitz across town last month, Grocery Bag quickly returns to the stage in support of New York City-based band the Thing. Earlier this year, the tireless trio released a three-song EP titled Stop Calling Me Out.

Surfer Girl

Wednesday 15, 29th Street Ballroom

Named after the Beach Boys’ song/album of the same name, Surfer Girl attempts to evoke similar palettes of serenity with its fusion of reggae and pop. The Carter Reeves-fronted group released its third full-length, Sunset, last April. Singer-songwriter Dylan Cotrone opens.
