Music theater group to hold auditions for ‘Cinderella’ as it celebrates 50 years

Lorain Community Music Theater is inviting performers to help celebrate a milestone season as it holds auditions for its summer production of “Cinderella: The Enchanted Edition.”

Auditions will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. March 1 and 6 to 8 p.m. March 3 in the gym at St. Peter School, 3655 Oberlin Ave. in Lorain.

Sign-ups are available at www.LCMTshows.org.

All roles are open.

Luke Scattergood, director of the production, said this year’s show was selected with the organization’s 50th anniversary in mind.

“Our show this year is ‘Cinderella,’” Scattergood said. “It’s the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

“We are doing the Enchanted edition. We were looking for something that was kind of big and could involve a lot of people.”

The Enchanted edition closely follows the popular 1990s television movie starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, Scattergood said.

The production will feature a full orchestra of more than 20 musicians.

“It’s going to be a big show,” Scattergood said.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a 16- to 32-bar cut of a song similar in style to the show that demonstrates vocal range.

Auditioners should bring piano sheet music; an accompanist will be provided.

Headshots and resumes are appreciated, but not required.

Initial auditions will consist of singing for the director and music team.

If needed, performers may be asked to sing scales to determine vocal range.

There will be no dance call at the first audition.

Callbacks, which include a dance portion and readings for specific roles, will take place March 8, and those selected will be contacted directly.

Nothing has been precast.

There are about 10 named roles, including Cinderella, the Fairy Godmother, the King and Queen, and the Stepmother, along with numerous ensemble opportunities.

“We want to be a reflection of our community,” Scattergood said. “We’re open to all ages, all ethnicities, everything.”

Rehearsals will begin in early June and run Sunday through Thursday evenings.

The show will be performed July 23–26 at the Performing Arts Center at Lorain High School, 2600 Ashland Ave.

“It is quite a commitment,” Scattergood said. “But, it’s also nice because you get to know these people pretty well and form your little community of theater people.”

As Lorain Community Music Theater marks 50 years, Scattergood said he hopes both new and returning performers will take the stage.

“Come out and audition and help us celebrate our 50 years,” he said.
