The Boston Celtics surprised everyone when Jaylen Brown kept the team as contenders during a “rebuild year,” and surprised everyone again when Jayson Tatum returned after only being gone 10 months due to an Achilles injury. Now, the C’s are poised to be the team that comes out of the Eastern Conference.

However, if disaster strikes, and the Celtics are somehow second-round exits, the debate of splitting up the Jays will come up once again. NBA insider Sam Amick revealed on Run it Back that if they are, the Celtics could think about trading a Jay, most likely for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“I think it’s a matter of how the playoffs go…If they’re raising the trophy again, then obviously this noise is going to completely go away. If they get bounced in the second round, like any other team in that spot, they’re gonna look at the landscape,” Amick said.
The Jays have been together since 2017, and in that time they’ve made the playoffs eight consecutive times. Of those eight, they made the Eastern Conference finals five times. They’ver made the NBA Finals twice, where they lost in six games to the Golden State Warriors in 2022, and won in five games against the Dallas Mavericks in 2024.

This discourse on splitting up the Jays has been there pretty much since day one. Usually it’s Jaylen Brown getting the shorter end of the stick and being traded, but after winning a Finals MVP and his MVP-level season this year, it could be 50-50.
However, more likely than not, the Celtics won’t trade a Jay, period. At least not for the next few years. They’ve been way too successful with them, and they look like the team to beat this year. Hopefully, Boston ignores all the noise, and makes the Jays into permanent Boston legends.
