NCSE launches new Bridging Gaps program


I am so excited to share with our community the newest program at NCSE called Bridging Gaps. For more than four decades, NCSE has stood as a guardian at the gates of K-12 science education, ensuring that evolution and climate change are taught with accuracy and that our classrooms are free from ideology. As the education landscape shifts, we recognize that defending science education from external forces is no longer enough. In order to truly protect science classrooms and prepare students for the world around them, we must engage with the world outside of the classroom as well. This is the heart and purpose of Bridging Gaps, our new program area dedicated to fostering strategic partnerships and amplifying our impact on a much larger, and highly sustainable, scale.

Why is this bridgebuilding so vital right now? The challenges facing K-12 science education are persistent and systemic. In an era of rampant misinformation, teachers need the social capital and expert backing of the broader scientific community to teach sensitive topics with confidence. Furthermore, Bridging Gaps is a tool for equity. By fostering these external connections, we can provide training, support, and resources to teachers across the country, not just those who have the ability to attend large national conferences. 

Bridging Gaps is not just another professional development workshop; it is a movement toward a “collective impact” model of scientific  literacy. It is all about closing the distance between policy and practices that impact the classroom. We understand that science teachers are sometimes the sole ambassadors of science in their communities, often facing immense pressure and  limited resources. This program aims to change that by building a scaffold of support around them. By connecting with other organizations that impact teachers — universities, school districts, state associations, national science organizations, and others — we are creating an ecosystem that prioritizes the protection of accurate, evidence-based science education.

The strength of this initiative lies in its diverse array of partners. We are working alongside scientific institutions and universities to give teachers easier access to our programming while connecting them with local supports that are easily accessible. We are collaborating with curriculum developers to include our inquiry-based, high-quality materials in their resources for teachers. We are engaging with national organizations and collectives that share our passion for science education to drive science education reform from the highest levels down to individual classrooms. Groups like the National Academies of Sciences, Subject to Climate, University of Florida Research, and our very own Sound Science Fellows.

Ultimately, Bridging Gaps is about a shared vision. We believe that scientific literacy is a civic necessity, and achieving it requires more than just a dedicated teacher; it requires an engaged community. By moving beyond traditional outreach, we are sparking a cultural shift that makes science education a priority for everyone. We invite you to join us in this effort to ensure that the next generation is not only informed but inspired to meet the challenges of the future. From professional organizations that guide teachers to the national collectives that drive policy decisions within states, NCSE is there, joining in the conversations that protect the accurate teaching of science and that keep ideology out of, and evidence in, our classrooms.
