Netflix launches kids’ gaming app ‘Netflix Playground’ amid renewed push


Netflix has announced the launch of a new standalone application for children’s games, titled Netflix Playground, as part of its broader expansion into interactive entertainment, according to a report by TechCrunch.

The app is included within a Netflix subscription and does not feature advertisements or in-app purchases. It offers access to what the company described as an expanding library of games designed for younger audiences.

Netflix Playground is aimed at children aged eight and under and is being launched with titles featuring characters from popular children’s programming. The application is currently available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Philippines and New Zealand, with a global rollout scheduled for April 28. It is accessible on both iOS and Android platforms.

The company stated that the app can be used offline without a mobile or Wi-Fi connection, positioning it as suitable for use during travel or in situations with limited connectivity.

Among the initial titles available is Playtime With Peppa Pig, which allows users to engage in interactive activities within the world of Peppa Pig. Another game based on Sesame Street includes activities such as memory card matching and connect-the-dots exercises. Additional titles include Let’s Color, Storybots and Bad Dinosaurs.

John Derderian, Vice President of Animation Series and Kids & Family TV at Netflix, stated that the company aims to create an environment where children can engage with stories interactively, combining viewing and gameplay into a single experience focused on discovery and learning.

Netflix first entered the gaming segment in 2021 with plans to expand aggressively, but has since moderated its ambitions after its titles struggled to gain significant traction. The company has also shut down several gaming studios, including Boss Fight Entertainment, Spry Fox and an internal AAA studio.

In late 2024, Netflix expanded into television-based gaming with a slate of party-style titles designed for group play, including TV adaptations of Tetris and Pictionary. The company has also indicated that it plans to prioritise cloud gaming, although it noted that these initiatives remain in early stages.
