Neve Campbell is back as Sidney Prescott in Scream 7, returning to the role she first portrayed on the big screen in Wes Craven’s original film back in 1996. When the original Scream became a major success at the time, it spawned a massive franchise, allowing Campbell and Craven to reunite for the first three sequels. Sadly, Craven passed away in 2015, leaving 2011’s Scream 4 as the final film he directed.
Via the Hello Sidney podcast, Campbell reflected on working with Craven on the original Scream in a new interview. She recalled his “twisted sense of humor,” including the distinctive way he’d giggle while filming some of the most gruesome scenes for Scream. Campbell can also remember the passion Craven had for filmmaking along with the “gleeful” personality he had on the set.
“He really, I mean, he had a very twisted sense of humor,” Campbell said. “Yes, he makes dark films, but he also was a professor, like a history professor, an English professor. So he has this sort of — he literally walked like a gazelle. He had this tall, sort of lanky professory look. And he would sort of glide onto set, and sit down, and get behind the monitor, and you would do these horrific things, and you would just hear [laughter].”
She added, “He just loved making movies. He loved horror. He was gleeful.”

Campbell also admitted that she still hasn’t seen A Nightmare on Elm Street, another one of Craven’s most iconic films. She insisted that she still needs to watch it, but struggles with “sitting down and scaring myself.” With that said, it’s clear that Campbell still remembers Craven very fondly. Perhaps the late filmmaker would be very proud to see Campbell still going strong in the franchise they helped bring to life together after three full decades.
Campbell returned for Scream (2022), though she was absent for the following sequel, Scream VI. Scream 7 rectifies that by putting Sidney back as the protagonist, giving the character one more run-in with mysterious Ghost Face killers. There’s no guarantee Sidney will survive this time, and fans will have to check out the film on the big screen to see if that’s the case.
Scream 7 hits theaters on Feb. 27, 2026.
