The Institute of Statistical Research and Training of Dhaka University began a two-day international conference titled Data-Driven Solutions: Unlocking New Possibilities at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of DU on Sunday.

DU pro-vice-chancellor, academic, Professor Mamun Ahmed was present as chief guest at the inaugural session, said a press release. 

Chaired by conference organising committee president and ISRT director Professor Tamanna Hawlader, Professor Ahmed Mushtaq Raja Chowdhury of Columbia University in the United States spoke as special guest at the conference.

ISRT professor Md Ishrat Raihan expressed vote of thanks at the conference, which was jointly moderated by students of the institute Tasnuba Binte Farazi and Humaira Mahzebin Turin.

Stressing the growing need for statistics and data science for evidence-based decision-making, policy formulation and sustainable development, Professor Mamun Ahmed said, ‘The use of data science was gradually increasing in various fields of society and the state.’

He welcomed the researchers from home and abroad participating in the conference, saying, ‘Such conferences will play a helpful role in strengthening the relationship between public and private universities and industry and academia.’

He expressed the hope that this conference would also play an effective role in bridging the global demand with statistics and data science education. ‘It is essential to further strengthen research in this field for the greater good of society.’

The conference featured keynote and technical paper presentations, panel discussions and exchange sessions.

Various topics, including statistical learning, machine learning, data analytics, computational methods and application of data science to solve real problems were discussed in the conference.
