New Bern, NC — The streets of downtown New Bern are a little quieter this week as the community mourns the loss of one of its most cherished figures. Howard Matthews, affectionately known as the “Music Man of New Bern,” passed away, leaving a melody-filled legacy that will long echo through the city he loved.
For years, Howard’s gentle strumming and soulful singing floated through Middle Street, creating a soundtrack for locals and visitors alike. Whether seated near Baker’s Kitchen or settled on his favorite park bench, his music brought warmth, joy, and a sense of hometown connection to all who passed by.
New Bern Mayor Jeffrey Odham shared a touching tribute on social media, reflecting the sentiments of many who knew Howard—whether personally or simply through his music.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the passing of New Bern’s ‘Music Man’ Howard Matthews. If you’ve ever been downtown, you’ve likely seen, and heard, Howard strumming and singing while sitting on a park bench. His smile was infectious and will be missed. Rest in peace.”
The New Bern Historical Society also honored him, writing:
“With heavy hearts, we say rest in peace to our dear friend Mr. Howard Matthews. Howard was a friend to all and such a wonderful ambassador of our hometown. We know you’re happily sitting on heaven’s bench, smiling down and sharing your beautiful musical talents in all of our memories. We will truly miss you and cherish the special moments you gave us.”
Businesses and organizations across downtown joined in remembering him. Front Street Fish Co. wrote that Mr. Howard “didn’t just play music; he created connection,” noting how his bluesy melodies and friendly greetings made everyone feel like an old friend. “His smile, his voice, and his spirit were part of the rhythm of this place His song will always be part of Middle Street.”
Greater Downtown New Bern also paid tribute, saying downtown “will not be the same.” They remembered him as a staple of Middle Street, a welcoming presence whose music “pulled you in, made you sing along, and made you smile.” For years, Howard even hosted his own stage at MumFest, proudly supporting fellow local artists.
Howard Matthews leaves behind a legacy of joy, warmth, and music—one that will continue to echo through New Bern for years to come.
