New Hope Pet Rescue opens charitable gaming location to support the shelter

HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) – New Hope Pet Rescue just opened a new spot on South Green Street where people can pay to play casino-like games.

Inside the building are nearly two dozen gaming machines and all the winnings go to support the animal shelter.

Employees say all the Funds raised through their charitable gaming location will directly support veterinary care, shelter operations, and other activities that help keep the shelter running.

They are able to do this through a charitable gaming license through the state of Kentucky. The proceeds are collected and reported in accordance with state regulations.

“We’re the charitable– we’re non-profit and that’s the only way we’re able to have them is because we are a non-profit 501C3,” says Paula Hawkins, director of New Hope Animal Rescue.

She adds that this will help in raising funds since overall donations have been down.

“I’ve been open 17 and a half years, but it’s really gotten bad these last few years so it gives the public something to do and have fun and then their money is also donated,” Hawkins said.

The animal shelter has partnered with Arrow International who provides and maintains the machines.

“We researched it for about a year and finally I decided to jump on board and give it a try and hopefully it’s gonna work out. It just depends on how many supporters we get out playing the games,” Hawkins said.

Animal rescue employees say there are other ways people can support the shelter.

“They can come in even to volunteer,” says Tammy Jackson, employee at New Hope Animal Rescue. “That helps us a lot, a whole lot, we need volunteers. Cash donations, they can bring in food, or bedding, or cat litter, cat food. Anything that’s donated we use it.”

New Hope Animal Rescue Charitable Gaming is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 11 to 10.
