NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A New Orleans attorney filed a motion asking an Orleans Parish civil judge to force Mayor LaToya Cantrell to lay out her private finances in open court.
Justin Schmidt, the attorney for Anne Breaud, asked a judge in a Dec. 2 filing to order Cantrell to produce her tax returns, pay stubs, title papers, and a series of other financial records.
Schmidt argues Cantrell owes him $9,763.94 in court-ordered attorneys’ fees as a result of her twice-failed attempt to get a restraining order against Breaud.
Cantrell claimed Breaud stalked and harassed her after Breaud took photos of Cantrell and former security guard Jeffrey Vappie from Breaud’s balcony. The state Supreme Court declined to take up the case, and Breaud has filed a lawsuit against Cantrell.
Schmidt’s filing states that Cantrell has so far paid $15,540.36 in attorneys’ fees related to the failed restraining order attempts.
His filing includes a Nov. 5, 2024, email from Cantrell’s attorney Eddie Castaing, which states Cantrell “does not have the available funds or net assets to pay the balance.”
Castaing requested that Schmidt wait 30 days so that Cantrell could obtain the funds needed.
Schmidt wrote that Cantrell has not made an effort to pay the balance and requested that the judge order Cantrell to explain her finances as a result.
Castaing declined to comment for this story.
