Athens and Nicosia are starting 2026 by turning down the volume on New Year’s celebrations. The capitals of Greece and Cyprus are replacing traditional high-decibel fireworks with low-noise pyrotechnics, light shows and drone displays to protect children, elderly residents and pets, whose hearing is more sensitive than humans’. Athens has adopted “quiet” fireworks, while Nicosia has abandoned fireworks entirely, citing concerns over public health, safety, animal welfare and the environment. Officials say drone technology offers creative spectacle without the injuries, stress and pollution associated with conventional fireworks.
