NEW YEAR’S EVE MOVIES TO WATCH WHILE WAITING FOR MIDNIGHT

This isn’t the first New Year’s Eve list of movies that has been curated here, but it is the first in a couple of years. Still, there are a few other movies coded for this underrated (as far as movies go!) holiday that are new or I’ve recently seen, and so we begin the research of discovering what will fit on this short and sweet list.

THE AGE of ADALINE

I think some viewers find this film endlessly tiresome. I think it’s quite charming and based on what I’ve seen also something that is really unique based off the titles I’ve seen. It’s about a woman who, in the 1900s meets and marries the love of her life, loses him, and then through some odd twist of fate when she herself is in an accident, she becomes ageless, living through wars, generations and moving around with a new name each time so as not to become some kind of scientific experiment. Things all go fine until she meets the son of a man she once made a fatal mistake with: she fell in love.

Synopsis: Blake Lively and Harrison Ford star in this stirring romantic drama about a 29-year-old woman who has stopped aging – and the timeless power of love. – Prime Video

THE APARTMENT

Shirley MacLaine stars in this favorite dramedy about a woman who, after being part of an ill-chosen affair, befriends Jack Lemmon, a man who also works at her office. The film is considered a solid romance and one of the higher rated titles with users. I liked it but didn’t love the film but still, perhaps a second viewing would change my mind. It’s a movie that does have a New Year’s Eve scene!

Stream, at publication, with MGM+ (note, this will leave MGM+ in three days) or Tubi TV; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video

BACHELOR MOTHER

Not one I saw, on databases, this one has a New Year’s shoutout. It has Ginger Rogers playing a woman who takes in an abandoned baby.

Synopsis: After finding a baby on a doorstep, a single department store clerk finds herself forced by her employer to take care of the abandoned infant.  – Tubi

BELL, BOOK, CANDLE

Little did I know that this one is actually a Christmas into New Year’s (mostly) movie and well, it’s quite cute. Goes to show you one cannot base an opinion solely on a title! It has James Stewart in the role of a man that his neighbor (who happens to be a witch!) decides to make fall in love with her. Of course, there ends up being more heart and humanity to the story.

Synopsis: A Greenwich Village witch falls for her dashing neighbor. When she learns he’s engaged, she casts a love spell but risks losing her powers for good. – Tubi

BRIDGET JONES: MAD about the BOY

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor (aka the first Bridget’ movie), this one centers on the holidays and has a New Year component even if not the entire setting, it still fits and this movie is, much to my surprise, very heartwarming even with the “big picture” sadness that now rule Bridget’s choices.

Synopsis: Bridget finally has some luck with her family and career, but new problems arise as she reenters the dating world and meets a younger lover. – Peacock

THE CUTTING EDGE

This one, which is a cult classic lore film about two opposite skaters (him a former hockey player, her a figure skater) who must pair up in order to save their respective careers. It’s a film I recently rewatched and do still enjoy. Plus, there is a new year party!

AMA | Moviestore Collection Ltd / Alamy

Synopsis: Action and romance take to the screen when a self-centered ex-hockey star (D.B. Sweeney) and a prima donna champion figure skater (Moira Kelly) become unlikely partners in pursuit of Olympic gold. – Prime Video

Stream, at publication, with Prime Video (it will leave Prime in a matter of three days) or Tubi TV

FLIRTING with FORTY

Heather Locklear leads this cast about a woman who, post divorce, is encouraged to start over. While her ex has the kids, she travels alone to Hawaii where she unexpectedly meets a cute guy. The problem? He’s a lot younger than her making their fun just that, but difficult to translate into her very adult problems (a business, testy clients, children, custody issues).

Synopsis: Jackie (Heather Locklear) is a recently divorced mother of two vacationing alone in Hawaii for her 40th birthday. Against her better judgment, she allows the hunky, much younger, resident surf instructor (Robert Buckley) to sweep her off her feet. – Prime Video

THE GREAT GATSBY

I have zero idea if there is a New Years scene, but this entire movie is like one big, extravagant and ridiculous party which puts one in mind of the more reasonable parties we host. It follows an extravagant and unusual man and the love triangle he becomes a part of when he falls for the beautiful Daisy.

Synopsis: Baz Luhrmann tackles F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, with blockbuster star Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. Spider-Man’s Tobey Maguire stars as the Fitzgerald-like would-be writer Nick Carraway who arrives in New York in 1922. Bearing witness to this new world, Nick pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and unforgettable tragedy — mirroring our own times and struggles. – Prime Video

Purchase, at publication, on places like Prime Video; Prime Video is also advertising this as coming to their service in a couple of days

HAPPY NEW YEAR, CHARLIE BROWN!

We have to have at least one happy-go-lucky addition to this list, right? The Peanuts gang has been beloved for generations and with the recent acquisition headlines as regards all things Peanuts, it’s hard for their lasting and staying power to not speak for itself.

Synopsis: Will Charlie Brown finish his book report in time to join Peppermint Patty’s big party? – Prime Video

Stream, at publication, with Apple TV

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

Peak (or as some would say cringe) millennial era (it was this generation, right?), yes, but I mean really, we have to appreciate this film not just for its New Year’s scene, but also for its cozy quirkiness, right?

DISNEY | Cinematic Collection / Alamy

Synopsis: Polar opposites Troy and Gabriella try out for the school musical. – Prime Video

Stream, at publication, with Disney+; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video

HOLIDATE

A film with Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey (one of two of their co-starring roles), this movie is about a couple who decide to be one another’s “plus one” over the course of a year which includes important holidays (including New Year’s Eve) and wedding dates, too.

Stream, at publication, with Netflix

THIS TIME NEXT YEAR

Based on the novel by Sophie Cousens, this one is very New Years-centric. It follows two people who were born on the same day and their different encounters over the next year. So, the film starts and ends on NYE. The movie is also absurdly charming (in the best kind of way) and I did love it.

Synopsis: No matter how much chemistry there is between cake seller Minnie and CEO Quinn, and no matter how often their paths cross, Minnie is determined not to fall in love with Quinn. – Prime Video

Digitally purchase on place like Prime Video

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING

Traditionally more Christmas than New Year, this one does have some connection to NYE too. Though aside from a party that Lucy attends, I cannot remember if there is more to it. This 90s dramedy is “timeless” for many of us and follows the hapless Lucy (whom Sandra Bullock effortlessly plays), a hard-working subway worker who develops a crush on a guy who she doesn’t know, and then after she saves him, his family mistakes her for his fiancé. It’s a cute premise.

Synopsis: Lucy, a lonely subway worker, becomes smitten with a handsome stranger (Peter Gallagher). But when she saves his life after he’s been mugged and fallen into a coma, his hilariously offbeat family mistakes her for his fiancée! – Prime Video
