NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Bargain hunters looking to give back can do both by shopping with a New York-based nonprofit that sells discounted fashion and directs the proceeds to schools for supplies.
The nonprofit, The Fashion Foundation, was started by founder Amanda Munz after what she describes as an “epiphany” during her time working in fashion. Munz attended fashion school and later interned with a designer, where she noticed large amounts of clothing and accessories left unused in the office. She wanted to find a way to keep those items from going to waste while also helping students.
Brands and designers donate items to the organization, and Munz and her team sell them online at reduced prices — in some cases as much as 93% off. Munz said the approach keeps clothes, shoes and accessories out of landfills while raising money for schools.
The Fashion Foundation has helped more than 55,000 schoolchildren and kept more than 215,000 pounds of merchandise out of landfills.
The nonprofit primarily donates money to schools in New York’s tri-state area, but Munz said that during the back-to-school season the organization offers a way for people to nominate a teacher anywhere in the U.S. to have their classroom wish list cleared.
