The NBA’s board of governors voted today to approve a plan that will allow the league to formally begin exploring expansion to Seattle and Las Vegas. League officials will now start talking with prospective ownership groups, gauge the cost of each potential team and look into what stadium they would play at.
One Roof Sports and Entertainment has emerged as the frontrunner to buy Seattle’s team. The group, led by Seattle Kraken owner Samantha Holloway, was created earlier this week and bought shares to become the majority owner of Climate Pledge Arena.
Governor Bob Ferguson applauded today’s announcement, calling it a “milestone” in the effort to bring the NBA back to Seattle.
Their official return is now pending final approval from the league’s board of governors, which could come as soon as this summer.

The Mariners have announced their Opening Day roster ahead of tomorrow’s season opener.
Shortstop J.P Crawford and starting pitcher Bryce Miller will both start the year on the injured list. The team placed Crawford on the 10-day IL as he deals with right shoulder inflammation, while Miller will start off on the 15-day IL with a left oblique strain.
Leo Rivas will now start at shortstop with Ryan Bliss taking over as utility man, while Emerson Hancock takes the place of Miller in the starting rotation. Miles Mastrobuoni was also placed on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain.
Meanwhile, Mitch Garver will back up Cal Raleigh at catcher, while offseason addition Andrew Knizner cleared waivers and will head to free agency.
The M’s enter the year with the third-best World Series odds on several major sportsbooks behind the Dodgers and Yankees They’ll open their season at home tomorrow with Logan Gilbert taking the mound against the Cleveland Guardians.

You’ve heard of Sunday, Monday and Thursday night football, but 12’s fans will be gearing up for some Wednesday night magic to open their title defense season.
The NFL announced today that the Seahawks will play their first game of the season on the Wednesday of Week 1 instead of hosting the usual Thursday night opener. That’s because the Rams and 49ers are opening their seasons in Melbourne, Australia in a game that will be broadcast on Thursday night in the US.
Seattle will play at 5:30 pm on Sept. 9 against an opponent that still has yet to be announced.
It’s the first time the NFL has opened its season on a Wednesday since 2012.

The Kraken rallied to salvage a much-needed point last night to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Seattle scored four late goals to force a shootout against the Florida Panthers, but ultimately fell 5-4 to drop their fourth straight match. The Panthers held a 3-0 lead midway through the third period, but Ryker Evans, Matty Beniers and Jordan Eberle scored before Bobby McMann tied the game with just under four minutes left.
Florida ended up scoring the lone goal of the shootout, but Seattle still earned a point. They now sit five points behind Nashville for the final playoff spot in the West.
The Kraken will try to snap their four-game losing streak tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
