TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Northeastern State University (NSU) has added a new interdisciplinary bachelor of science degree in military science.
“This new degree in military science provides our students with a unique opportunity to develop the leadership, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success in military and civilian careers alike,” said NSU President Rodney Hanley. “At Northeastern State University, we are committed to preparing the next generation of leaders while honoring the tradition of service that is at the heart of our ROTC and veteran programs.”
Students pursuing the degree will be able to choose electives in three focus areas: communication, public relations and operations and management.
The university stated, “The degree program emphasizes leadership, strategy, management, operations, military theory and doctrine, communication and homeland security. Students will study the historical context of military approaches, apply principles in decision-making and refine communication skills essential to effective operations.”
Over the past four years, NSU has been given the Silver Military Friendly School designation from Viqtory and has been recognized as a Veteran Employer Champion for their support of military students through NSU’s Veteran Services office and participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which awards students with academic credit for prior military service.
Captain Brent Welch, an Assistant Professor of Military Science at NSU, said, “NSU’s commitment to this population is further evidenced by its dedicated support services for military-affiliated students, including academic advising tailored to their unique circumstances and resources for navigating VA benefits. This holistic approach ensures that students are not only academically supported but also have the necessary tools to succeed in their educational journey and beyond.”
