OAK HARBOR – Oak Harbor High School and Junior High Science Olympiad teams have both qualified for the State Science Olympiad Competition, which will take place Saturday, April 18, at The Ohio State University. Both teams earned 3rd place finishes in their respective divisions at the regional competition held at Bowling Green State University on March 14, securing their spots among Ohio’s top teams.
The high school team advanced to state by placing third out of 18 teams, continuing an impressive run of success. The team’s performance reflected months of preparation and collaboration across a wide range of STEM events.
The junior high team, made up of just nine members, demonstrated incredible dedication by competing in all 23 possible events. Their third-place finish out of 10 teams marks only the second time in school history the junior high team has qualified for the state competition. The group was mentored throughout the season by members of the high school team, highlighting the strong leadership within the program.
Among the day’s highlights were three gold medal performances:
- Helicopter (High School): Derek Lochotzki & Kale John
- Helicopter (Junior High): Zoey Wilson & Chelsea Meckfessel
- Hovercraft (High School): Derek Lochotzki & Carter Hartman
In total, Oak Harbor students medaled in 26 different events during the competition.
The Oak Harbor Science Olympiad program continues to showcase the talent, teamwork, and dedication of students pursuing excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
