OECD Report Highlights Greece’s Progress in Recent Years

The significant progress made in Greece’s fiscal policy reforms, particularly regarding the performance budget, expenditure review, and the integration of the environmental ‘green dimension’ into the budget, was discussed on March 3 at a workshop organized by the General Accounting Office at the National Gallery, during which a relevant OECD report was presented for the first time in Greece.

During the workshop, the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Athanasios Petralias noted that the OECD report highlights the progress Greece has made over the last few years regarding reforms related to public spending: the performance budget, expenditure and revenue reviews, and the integration of the environmental dimension into the budget.

Petralias emphasised that, for the conduct of fiscal policy both in times of crisis and in normal times, it is particularly important that Greece has developed tools that strengthen the country’s resilience and support the substantive evaluation of the effectiveness of public spending, as well as decision-making regarding the proper allocation or reallocation of available resources.

In its study on budget reforms, the OECD noted that Greece has established a robust framework for monitoring public expenditure and revenue, resulting in an improved cost-benefit ratio in public administration.

The study specifically notes that Greece has strengthened the transparency, accountability, and strategic orientation of its budget, while particularly highlighting the high quality and reliability of the tools the country has developed for costing and evaluating its public policies.
