Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham provided a concerning update after his early exit against the Washington Wizards, missing Wednesday’s practice due to back spasms, according to Detroit Free Press’ Omari Sankofa II.
His status is now uncertain for the rematch, leaving Detroit preparing for the possibility of playing without its All-Star guard.
Cunningham exited Tuesday’s 130-117 win over Washington early in the first quarter, and while the injury is not believed to be serious, the Pistons have yet to provide an official update ahead of Wednesday’s game.
Cunningham Status Unclear After Early Exit
The 24-year-old guard logged just five minutes before being ruled out, finishing with six points, two rebounds and one steal.
The injury occurred during a scramble for a loose ball midway through the opening quarter, when Cunningham collided with Wizards rookie Tre Johnson. He remained down briefly before attempting to play through the discomfort for a few possessions.
He was later ruled out for the remainder of the game.
With no formal designation yet from the team, Cunningham can be considered day-to-day as Detroit evaluates his progress.
Pistons Lean on Depth Amid Injury Concerns
Cunningham’s uncertain status comes as Detroit continues to navigate a growing list of injuries.
The Pistons have already lost Isaiah Stewart to a Grade 1 calf strain, and the team has indicated he will be reevaluated in one week. The absence of Stewart, one of Detroit’s key frontcourt contributors, adds further strain to the rotation as the regular season winds down.
Despite the mounting injuries, Detroit showed resilience in Tuesday’s win.
Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff pointed to the team’s ability to adapt.
“Unfortunately, we’ve dealt with a lot this season and had to call on different guys throughout the year,” Bickerstaff said. “Tonight was an opportunity to do that, give guys minutes and give guys opportunities to see what they could do.”
Daniss Jenkins stepped into an expanded role, starting the second half and finishing with 15 points and a game-high seven assists. His steady presence helped stabilize the offense after Cunningham’s departure.
If Cunningham is unable to play on Wednesday, Jenkins and Marcus Sasser are expected to see increased minutes in the backcourt.
All-Star Impact Leaves Big Void
Cunningham’s importance to Detroit’s success is significant.
The All-Star guard is averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists and 5.6 rebounds this season, serving as the team’s primary offensive engine and playmaker.
His absence would leave a substantial void in both scoring and ball distribution, particularly in a game with a quick turnaround.

With 14 games remaining, the Pistons are prioritizing health as they prepare for the postseason.
“The most important thing is health and habits,” Bickerstaff told reporters before they beat the Wizards. “We’ve got to make sure we’re doing things right on the off days, how we’re recovering and all those things.”
Detroit has already navigated multiple injuries this season, and Cunningham’s situation adds another layer of complexity as the schedule tightens.
The recent return of Ausar Thompson from a right ankle sprain provided a boost, but Cunningham’s uncertain status could offset that momentum.
Pistons Holding Strong Position
Despite the injury concerns, the Pistons remain well-positioned in the Eastern Conference standings.
Detroit holds a four-game lead over the Boston Celtics for the No. 2 seed, giving the team some cushion as it navigates the final stretch of the regular season.
Still, Cunningham’s availability will be a key factor in maintaining that position.

The Pistons will conclude their road trip with Wednesday’s rematch against Washington before returning home to face the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers.
