Police in Thessaloniki said Tuesday they have arrested a man in possession of hundreds of forged €20 banknotes, shortly after another three people were taken into custody in a nearby town in an apparently related case.
A police statement said officers from Kilkis arrested the suspect in his Thessaloniki home Monday in possession of 723 counterfeit notes and a gun fitted with a silencer.
On Sunday, police in Kilkis, north of Thessaloniki, had arrested three men for allegedly using fake €20 notes to make at least four purchases from local shops.
The arrests came after one of the suspects allegedly tried to use a forged €20 note to buy goods from a kiosk. But the kiosk owner didn’t fall for it and the man ran to the suspects’ car and drove away, only to be stopped and arrested by police later on.
