If you’re on the hunt for a QD-OLED monitor for under $400, then this is the deal for you. This excellent Samsung 27-inch Odyssey QD-OLED gaming monitor is $150 off in the Amazon Big Spring Sales, and has been reduced from $549.99 to $399.99. Now that is a very good price for a QHD, QD-OLED monitor with 99% DCI-P3 color, excellent contrast, and a speedy 180Hz refresh rate. As far as QD-OLED monitors go, this is one of the most affordable options I’ve come across, and it’s a good pick for mid-range 1440p setups, especially if you lean more into story-driven, atmospheric titles and plan on using this in lower-light environments.

Key features of this Samsung 27-inch Odyssey OLED G5 monitor

QD-OLED display

This monitor features a QD-OLED display, which combines Quantum Dot and OLED technology. This results in more vibrant color and, generally speaking, a bit more brightness than your older-style OLEDs. Where these displays come into their own is with their contrast ratios, of which this monitor is 1000000:1. This means that you’re getting incredibly deep blacks, which makes HDR content look realistic and lifelike, especially when used in lower light environments. If you want to amp up the immersion and atmosphere when gaming, a QD-OLED monitor like this one is a great shout.

180Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms response time

This is an excellent, but not overkill, combo that’s going to allow you to hit up to 180fps and experience on-screen motion with very little in the way of motion blur and ghosting. For fast-paced and competitive gaming, this is essential, as it will help you keep track of what’s happening on screen more easily, giving you an edge in-game.

OLED Safeguard

To help protect this screen from burn-in, it features a Thermal Modulation System, which can automatically detect potential hot spots and lower heat in those areas accordingly. For example, it can detect static images, like taskbars and logos, and can even subtly shift the entire image by a few pixels every few minutes, to ensure that one pixel doesn’t stay on screen too long.

QHD and 27 inches

This is the sweet spot for gaming, as at 27 inches, QHD resolution looks super crisp and sharp, saving you a load of cash on both a 4K monitor and 4K-ready gaming PC. It’s also big enough to be immersive if you’re sitting close to it, and not too big that it puts you at a competitive disadvantage in first-person shooters.

Things to consider

So this monitor is essentially an entry-level QD-OLED display, and while it does deliver good contrast, it does scale back to keep costs lower in certain departments. In short, it doesn’t appear to have any VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 rating, which means that it doesn’t meet all the criteria for the certification. I can see that its brightness is listed as below 400 nits, which is likely why it doesn’t have this rating. Is that an issue? In low-light rooms, no, but in bright environments, potentially. I think if you’re sticking to a budget of under $500, you may want to explore higher-end mini-LED monitors instead, as these will be brighter, have incredible color, and good, but not as good as QD-OLED, contrast ratios. These may give you a bit more bang for your buck, but the choice is yours! Check out our top gaming monitor deals below to see what’s currently on sale.
