Anyone who’s observed and/or participated in the city’s music scene in the past decade knows the name Samer Ghani. No, Ghani isn’t a musician, but a photographer, videographer, and champion of Milwaukee music. His era-defining band photos and live shots have graced the digital pages of this website (and many other websites) more times than we can count. And now, those photos are set to grace some physical pages as well.
Memories Of A Street Cat, a 271-page photo book of Ghani’s live music photographs taken in Milwaukee and beyond, is available for pre-order NOW. Local artists included in the book include Buffalo Nichols, Klassik, SistaStrings, Diet Lite, and Soul Low. (The book includes quotes from some of these artists, which were compiled by Milwaukee Record’s Matt Wild.) National artists make appearances, too, including Death Cab For Cutie and Bully. The book is $100, and is being published by DAYBREAK Magazine.
“These photos reflect the chapters of my journey that led me across the city and nation, documenting live music that spans dreams and genres across all walks of life,” Ghani writes in the foreward. “Much like a street cat, I belonged to no one place; and used lowlight to my advantage throughout the hunt, to those of you who have supported me throughout this dream, thank you for leaving food on your porch for me to eat.”
Memories Of A Street Cat will be released March 25, and will come complete with a free release party at Cactus Club. Klassik, Garden Home, Known Moons, El Sebas, and Living Room will play the ridiculously stacked show.
We can’t wait to get our hands on this thing. Congrats, Samer! And thank you, thank you, thank you for everything you do that makes Milwaukee a city worth documenting in the first place.
