Keystone Science School continues to expand opportunity for young women and gender-diverse students through its Girls in STEM initiative, recently completing its Snow and Avalanche program and preparing for its upcoming Medical Explorers program on April 3rd – 5th.
Women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM careers and post-secondary STEM degree programs. Research shows that this gap is influenced not only by access and opportunity, but also by differences in confidence, sense of belonging, and early exposure to role models in STEM fields. These factors begin shaping academic identity and career aspirations at a young age.
Keystone Science School’s Girls in STEM programs are intentionally designed to address these barriers. Delivered in an all-girl+ learning environment, the programs encourage participation, collaboration, leadership, and confidence. Participants learn directly from women currently working in STEM careers while building peer support networks and self-efficacy, both of which are critical to long-term persistence in STEM pathways.
This winter, KSS hosted Girls in STEM Snow Science, focused on careers related to snow and avalanche mitigation. In April, KSS will host Girls in STEM Medical Explorers in partnership with the Steadman Philippon Research Institute and Axis Sports Medicine. Designed for 4th through 12th grade female and non-binary kids, the immersive program introduces participants to careers in medical research. Students will engage in hands-on lab activities that demonstrate how orthopedic injuries are studied and treated, while connecting with leading women in medical science who share their professional journeys and insights.
Across all Girls in STEM offerings, Keystone Science School focuses on two core outcomes: increasing students’ understanding of STEM career pathways and strengthening their confidence to see themselves as capable participants in those fields.
