Proposed bill would create gas tax cap in Dutchess County

The Dutchess County Legislature is set to introduce a measure Thursday night to implement a cap on the county’s sales tax on gas.

It would go into effect on June 1 if passed, and legislators say it would cap the taxable base at $3 per gallon. That means people would not pay county sales tax on gas purchases above that threshold.

Onondaga County in Central New York recently limited sales tax collection to the first $4 of the per gallon price of gasoline and diesel fuel.

“Many Dutchess residents are at the pump at least once a week throughout the summer driving season, so this cap will provide real and meaningful relief for our working families, small business owners, contractors, and farmers,” said Dutchess County Legislature Chair Yvette Valdés Smith.

The measure will be introduced at Thursday night’s budget and finance committee meeting, which is set for 5:30 p.m.
