Q&A | Chanel’s Bruno Pavlovsky on Matthieu Blazy’s first collection and the state of the market ahead of Métiers d’Art 2026

Two months after a spectacular show that marked the debut of recently appointed creative director Matthieu Blazy, Chanel heads to New York for the launch of its Métiers d’Art 2026 collection.

Unique to Chanel, the Métiers d’Art range celebrates the maison’s unsung heroes, from embroiderer Lesage to milliner Maison Michel. The artisans of these legendary ateliers are behind Chanel’s most intricate creations, including its one-of-a-kind haute couture garments.

In anticipation of the Métiers d’Art show, the French maison launched a video starring long-time ambassador Margaret Qualley and the newly minted A$AP Rocky.

Directed by French filmmaker Michel Gondry – known for visually arresting music videos for artists like Björk and for films such as Academy Award winner Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) – the clip is a surrealist take on New York’s vibrant street life, set on busy subway trains and downtown neighbourhoods like the East Village and SoHo.

On the eve of the show, we sat down with Chanel’s president of fashion Bruno Pavlovsky to talk about Blazy’s era at Chanel, the importance of the US market to the brand and more.

Why did you decide to come to New York for Métiers d’Art 2026?

The reason why Matthieu and I decided to come and show here in New York is because, after Paris, New York is our second home. Mademoiselle Chanel was very connected to this city, Karl Lagerfeld showed a number of collections here, and Matthieu is a lover of this city, so it made sense for us to come back after our last show here at the Met Museum in December 2018. Now we’re back with something very different and very new. It was the right moment for Matthieu and his second show to be in the States and in New York. It was quite important to come to downtown New York with this new, fresh vision.

Tell me about the importance of the US market to Chanel.

The US has always been and still is the first market in terms of luxury globally. Now the economy here is doing very well and the business continues to boom and develop.
