Athens, February 26, 2026 – In a major step toward restoring public trust and elevating railway safety standards, the Greek government officially launched railway.gov.gr on February 25, 2026 (with public access rolling out progressively).
This innovative digital platform provides real-time oversight of the national railway network, marking Greece as a leader in transparent, technology-driven rail operations, nearly three years after the devastating Tempi train collision that claimed 57 lives on February 28, 2023.
Developed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in collaboration with the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE), the platform integrates high-precision satellite tracking based on the Hellenic Positioning System (HEPOS). It delivers centimeter-level accuracy (as precise as 5 cm) for train positions, with data transmitted to the OSE control center every few seconds. Key features include:
- Live tracking of train locations, speeds, directions, estimated arrivals, and delays.
- Initial coverage focused on the critical Athens–Thessaloniki corridor, with expansion planned to the full 2,000 km network by the end of April 2026.
- Digitization of safety processes enables rapid anomaly detection and collision prevention through immediate alerts.
- Enhanced transparency for passengers and citizens, who can monitor operations via web or mobile access.
- Implementation of seven key safety recommendations from the official investigation into the 2023 Tempi disaster, supporting ongoing reforms in risk management, incident analysis, and operational accountability.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis described the platform as a “powerful safety valve” that makes future collisions “impossible” by providing universal, real-time visibility. He emphasized its use of advanced GNSS/INS technology—previously reserved for aerospace and military applications—combined with inertial sensors and track-matching algorithms for reliable positioning even in tunnels or signal-loss scenarios.
The launch comes just days before the third anniversary of the Tempi tragedy, a head-on collision between a passenger and freight train attributed to human error compounded by systemic failures, including absent automated controls. Nationwide strikes and mobilizations are planned for February 28, 2026, to demand continued accountability and improvements.
This platform complements broader modernization efforts, including new train investments by operator Hellenic Train, upgraded signaling, remote-control systems, and organizational restructuring of rail entities. Officials highlight that railway.gov.gr not only boosts safety but also fosters public confidence by placing citizens at the center of oversight.
