Road traffic deaths in Greece fell by 22% in 2025 compared with the previous year, the European Commission has said, citing preliminary data.
Only Estonia recorded a larger drop, with fatalities declining by 38%.
Despite the improvement, Greece still ranks sixth in the European Union with 50 deaths per million inhabitants, behind Bulgaria (71), Romania (68), Croatia (67), Latvia (63) and Portugal (55).
Across the 27-member bloc, road deaths decreased by about 3% in 2025, to around 19,400 fatalities – 580 fewer than in 2024.
Despite the overall decline, most countries are not on track to meet the EU’s target of halving road deaths and serious injuries by 2030, an intermediate milestone under the Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate road fatalities by 2050.
Based on the preliminary figures – with final data due in the autumn – Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Poland and Romania are currently on track to achieve the 2030 target.
