Rob Green on Chelsea’s brutal bonuses and why he got paid nothing when they won the Europa League

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Rob Green has revealed that he and his team-mates received no bonuses for winning the Europa League in 2019.

The Blues thumped bitter rivals Arsenal 4-1 in the final in Baku, courtesy of goals from Olivier Giroud, Pedro and an Eden Hazard brace.

Green didn’t feature during that winning run but was a member of the squad as their third-choice goalkeeper.

And reflecting on that triumph, he disclosed that the Chelsea squad surprisingly didn’t receive a single penny as a reward for their achievement.

‘At Chelsea when we won the Europa League, I went in to see the secretary [David Barnard],’ he told Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast. ‘I went “Barney, there’s no bonus schedule for the Europa League? You don’t get a bonus?”‘

‘And he went [shrugs shoulders] “Well that’s not the European Cup. It’s the second tier isn’t it.”‘

Astounded by his answer, Ben Foster asked Green to elaborate why that was the case to which he replied: ‘We’re not interested in it.’

That was Green’s sole season at Stamford Bridge before retiring at the end of that campaign.

He didn’t play a minute under then manager Maurizio Sarri with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero ahead of him in the goalkeeper pecking order.
