Robot beavers and Colleen Hoover; movies to watch in March | Culture

After a slow February for movies, March holds a lot of variety with its releases, from robot beavers to podcast horror (not talking about Joe Rogan), it’s an all-over-the-place month for movies.

March 6

The first week of March will bring a brand new Pixar animated film, “Hoppers,” to theaters. Directed by Daniel Chong, the creator of “We Bare Bears,” the movie follows Mabel, an animal-lover whose mind gets transferred into a robotic beaver to communicate with animals.

Chong has served on the Pixar senior creative team since “Turning Red” in 2022 and this film acts as his first big picture swing.

Releasing on the same day as “Hoppers” is a new adaptation of the 1935 classic “The Bride of Frankenstein” in the form of “The Bride!,” a new film from Maggie Gyllenhaal. Starring Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster and recent Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley as the titular bride, this film is Gyllenhaal’s second movie as director.

There has been debate of whether or not this movie is a musical in disguise ever since Peter Sarsgaard, Gyllenhaal’s husband and star in the upcoming film, said that he was excited for “big dance numbers” in an interview with Hollywood Reporter. Gyllenhaal has denied that it’s a traditional musical, but expect singing and dancing anyway, based on reports.

Also on March 6 at the Ross, the recent best picture nominee “Train Dreams” will begin showing on the big screen. Now is the time to enjoy the Netflix film that was nominated for best cinematography in theaters.

If you haven’t caught enough Z’s yet, the Ross is also showing “Dreams,” an erotic drama following a socialite (Jessica Chastain) who has an affair with a promising ballet dancer (Isaac Hernández). Times for both “Train Dreams” and “Dreams” are yet to be announced, but both will be showing until March 12.

March 13

The second week of March is much more of a mixed bag when it comes to its movie releases, notably with “Reminders of Him,” an adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel of the same name. As with most Hoover books, the story is a romance, with Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers starring in the two lead roles.

Coming out on the same day, while not nearly as sexy, is the A24-distributed horror movie, “Undertone.” The film follows Evy (Nina Kiri), the skeptical host of a paranormal podcast who gets sent recordings from a married couple having paranormal experiences. Evy is the only character to be shown on screen for the movie, telling most of the film’s story through the audio and sound design.

One of the Oscar nominees for best international feature film, “Sirāt,” is coming to the Ross big screen and leaving on March 19. This Spanish-language film is about a father and son who travel to the Moroccan desert to infiltrate the underground rave scene in order to find a missing girl.

“Obex,” a science fiction fantasy movie about a 1987 gamer who gets trapped in his computer, is also showing at the Ross from March 13-19. Times for both movies haven’t been announced yet.

March 20

Releases for March 20 are highlighted by the sequel to the 2019 horror comedy “Ready or Not” starring Samara Weaving as Grace, a newlywed who has to escape her murderous in-laws.“Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” continues with Grace’s story, but introduces her estranged sister, Faith.

Faith is played by Kathryn Newton, one of many newcomers to the series, including Elijah Wood and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

A bigger release on the same day is another book adaptation from recent years, “Project Hail Mary.” The space adventure follows science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who wakes up on a spaceship with no recollection of how he got there.

Grace must use his knowledge and what’s left of his memory to figure out the mystery of how he got there and find a way home. “Project Hail Mary” is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, whose previous works include “The Lego Movie,” “21” and “22 Jump Street” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

While not getting a major wide-screen release, “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” will be releasing to Netflix on March 20. Most of the television series’ cast returns for this film that will act as the conclusion of the series.

March 27

Being completely honest, the week of March 27 is not a very good one; there’s nothing really noteworthy releasing.

The Ross will be showing the long-awaited sequel movie to “Nirvana the Band the Show,” appropriately titled “Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie.” There is no relation to the band Nirvana despite the name.

“Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie” follows the main characters from the TV show as they attempt to go back in time to make themselves famous, but get stuck in 2008. There are currently no listed showtimes for this film, but it will be screening at the Ross from March 27 to April 2.

March has a lot in store for moviegoers, especially horror fans, with the releases of “The Bride!,” “Undertone” and “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.” Lincoln cinephiles will also have a lot to enjoy this month at the Ross.
