Omer Yurtseven during a game against the Boston Celtics in January 2024
On Sunday, the Houston Rockets suffered a 145-120 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs in a game with significant implications in the tightly packed Western Conference.
Kevin Durant and Amen Thompson each scored 23 points but were unable to prevent Houston from falling to 39-24 on the season.
The Rockets currently sit fourth in the West, half a game behind the Minnesota Timberwolves in third. The Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets are close behind, each just half a game back in fifth and sixth.
Despite the loss, another storyline quietly emerged within the organization over the weekend.
Houston Rockets Affiliate Vipers Dominate as Omer Yurtseven Debuts
The Rockets’ G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, are also enjoying a strong season. They currently sit third in the Western Conference with an 18-9 regular season record.
On Sunday, Rio Grande delivered a commanding 137-100 blowout victory over the Windy City Bulls, marking their seventh win in the past ten games.
The contest was notable for the debut of Omer Yurtseven.
On March 4, the Vipers acquired the NBA veteran’s returning player rights from the Maine Celtics in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2027 NBA G League Draft and the player rights to Adonis Arms.
Yurtseven spent the past two seasons with Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos but struggled to secure a consistent role, leading to a return to the United States.
In Sunday’s win, the 27-year-old made an immediate impact with 22 points and 14 rebounds in just 27 minutes.
He shot an efficient 10-of-16 from the field while adding two assists and two blocks, with five of his rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Yurtseven’s team-high scoring total was matched by two-way guard Tristen Newton, who also recorded 22 points along with eight assists and three made three-pointers.
Elsewhere, Daishen Nix continued his strong form with 21 points and six assists, while Caleb McConnell contributed 20 points off the bench in the convincing victory.
Yurtseven Aiming for Another NBA Opportunity
Before spending the past two seasons in Greece, Yurtseven gained NBA experience with the Miami Heat and Utah Jazz after going undrafted in 2020.
Across 113 NBA games, he has averaged 5.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in just 11.8 minutes per game while shooting an efficient 65.3% from the field.
While the Turkish seven-footer was ultimately deemed surplus to requirements at Panathinaikos, his time in Europe was also disrupted by injuries, including a right leg fracture in January 2025.
In late February, Panathinaikos exercised an opt-out clause in Yurtseven’s contract to create additional playing time for French center Mathias Lessort.
The former Heat and Jazz center still possesses intriguing upside, something he quickly demonstrated in his debut for the Vipers.
Notably, Yurtseven is currently signed to a standard G League contract and is not tied to the Houston Rockets organization beyond their affiliate.
He remains eligible to sign with any NBA team on either a 10-day or standard contract. However, he is no longer eligible for a two-way deal as he is now in his fourth season of NBA service.
As the season progresses, opportunities like this often arise across the league.
Teams frequently turn to productive G League players for short-term reinforcements, and Yurtseven could position himself for another NBA call-up in the weeks ahead.
